Lighthouses of Canada

Fisgard

Fisgard lighthouse in Fort Rodd Hill Park was built by the British in 1860. Builders of Fisgard lighthouse competed with those building Race Rocks at the same time. (Race Rocks are visible in the distance from here.) The race was won by the Fisgard team who finished a month before those at Race Rocks. Entering Victoria harbour in 1860, Royal Navy ships could follow a straight bearing between the two positions and thence reach their port in Esquimault.

Bickford tower is an old brown brick structure at the southern entrance to Esquimault Naval base. Although it looks like a lighthouse it was built as a signalling tower, and almost immediately rendered obsolete when the first telephones were introduced.
